Description
Hubert Kokuluk was born on December 24th, 1944 to John and Barbara Kokuluk. He learned carving from his father and from watching the village elders. Noted artist John Taxac would take Kokuluk to the top of King Island to catch birds with a slingshot and net. Having hunted them extensively, Kokuluk is well-known for his remarkable detailed and accurate depictions of birds from puffin rookeries to swans. This snow goose carving from walrus ivory is an excellent example of his talent carving birds.
